Iconic Winemaker David Ramey's second label Sidebar wines present a chance for his team, including daughter Claire and Winemaker Lydia Cummins to make some unusual, yet seriously fun wines: "Sidebar varietals are invitingly fresh and satisfying in their youth. These aren’t wines for just the young; they are wines best drunk young with all their varietal vigor intact. Headpruned 125-year-old and 65-year-old vines, grafted to St. George roostock. Our blocks are 78% Zinfandel, 10% Alicante Bouschet, 10% Petite Sirah and a 2% composite of Sangiovese, Carignane, Trousseau, Petite Bouschet, Syrah, Beclan, Tannat, Peloursin, Graciano, Plavac Mali, Palomino and Monbadon. Originally planted in 1890. Part replanted in 1950 by Americo Rafanelli. A unique blend of grape varietals from a heritage vineyard, half planted 125 years ago and the other half 65 years ago." - David Ramey
Just 766 cases are made from hand-harvested grapes from the certified sustainable, historic Alegria Vineyard, with its oceanic and volcanic rocky soils and a climate that cools down 40 degrees daily during growing season to preserve acidity and brightness. The juice is native yeast-fermented, unfiltered and aged just 7 months in neutral oak to let the intensity of the fruit shine.
